My last trip to Laos was in 2008,I believe then it wasnt allowed to enter Vietnam from Nth.Laos.Ive been interested in doing that since 1998,there has been talk of opening a crossing for international travellers in the North but I dont know of it happening...

I personally like Vietnam (which is about 12x the population and 3x the size, top to bottom, of Laos as day of entry counts too)
now for the rest Vietnam will take all of your 4 weeks and requier visa leave you much time for that anyway....
