How can I make that a site automagically show a nice "Currently Offline" page when the server is down (I mean, the full server is down and the request can't reach IIS)
Changing the DNS manually is not an option.
Edit: I'm looking to some kind of DNS trick...

You may be able to use rsync to synchronise a folder on between the linux server and your PC folders, too.

I will leave this question open in case.
Recreating the maintenance plan while the offline database remained offline ended up solving the problem.
Optimal solution, and perhaps there is a better way.

Is there a way to set "work offline" in TFS without having to try opening a solution, waiting for it to time out, and then having Visual Studio work out that it has failed?

This process allows us to have a per application app_offline file but an easy way to take all our apps offline....
It's either app_offline.htm (when it's offline) or app_offline.online when it's online.
And offline by renaming a file.

You could test this while it's down, find and an offline site is really good, but only really applicable if you have a limited number of sites to manage on the server.

I have setup the logging module for my new python script. I have two handlers, one sending stuff to a file, and one for email alerts. The SMTPHandler is setup to mail anything at the ERROR level or above.
