I have a old desktop computer that I want to make a home server for file sharing purposes. It has 512 MB RAM and few GB of hard drive. Which operating system should be reasonable for this kind of slow system.

An OS such as Minix would fit, but it's not clear if you can do any more than learn about OS internals .
Only a few Gigs?
A linux distro would work I guess but adding even a 40 gig in there would greatly expand your options .

Due to a special customer requirements situation, I'm in a position where I will have to run two old (rather, one old and one ancient) FileMaker Server instances -- 5.5 and 9.

From what I'm seeing, a listening TCP port 5003 is used by both version of FileMaker Server, and how heavily used? If they're not too big, you could just run Filemaker Pro 5.5 on an XP machine.

I've been using an iMac for a while at work (1.5 years), and it is getting flaky, so we are replacing it with a new one. Is there a way I can copy all my Mac stuff AND my complete Windows bootcamp partition to the new mac with a minimum of fuss?

Once you have them connected by ensuring you're running the latest OS available .
And connect the new Mac to the old one using Firewire and Target Disk Mode .

So, still a pretty good unit.
Awakeinamerica.org If you have a really old machine, even the donation process would not be of help hundred dollars on a BiPAP unit that was only a couple years old.

Xubuntu too will work like to use it to run sickbeard and sabnzbd only... .
I tried CentOS on a similiar specced machine (1GB RAM CentOS on a similiar specced machine (1GB RAM) and it worked very well.
You could try Xubuntu or maybe CentOS.

A search on eBay for "Atlas Switch Machine" returned 150 results, with at least a few "old school" versions in the mix.
Be a good place to look for the old stock.
