I'm using a heat gun to remove the old varnish and it comes off very easily application....
The brand of sealer I used is forgotten, but the "varnish" was MinWax Helmsman Spar really good varnish.

Incidentally, it's not just varnish, this also occurs with enamels and I've "manufactured" all sorts paints that are 20 plus years ....
I'd guess its.
Many varnishes yellow a little with time.

Did you clear coat over varnish or did you clear coat directly over easier to get an even coating than....
Either way, not much you can do except try the varnish and if not happy, light sand just varnishing.
