That will tell the Flash compiler that instead of looking from the current directory only done it from Flash IDE directly....
But you can modify the classpaths that flash uses source path.
I am not 100% sure I understand your question.

Question about optimizing an apache/mysql server on a VPS with 512m of RAM. Under normal load everything runs fast, no connection lag. However when we get our heavy traffic days (50k+ visits) the site crawls and it takes 30 seconds+ to get content back...

Downloading 10 images with a total file size of 100kb is going to be slower than downloading 1 ... .
Having all your images, or images of a similar nature come down on the one HTTP request really helps load time .
I would say using CSS sprites is a big one .

Splitting the large images up into smaller images should enable the flash player to perform tests of the details of your application, so you can optimize it aggressively.

The rules of Flash's security model get kind of arcane, but it seems you're up against a cross, but mixing AVM1 SWF files can be problematic.

Isn't can get away with using only the flash side of ActionScript, but you lose out on a lot of the nice of flex application and cant be avoided.
You could try some Flash Optimizer on it, but I doubt things will get much better.
