Passive Preamps
I have a burning curiosity with these things, no idea why, I just want to try one.
Has anyone got one/tried one? What happened? Did it drastically change the sound? Was it better/worse/just different? Which brand/model?
I tried to get...

To use a passive successfully you need a good source and a power amplifier that's compatible with a passive pre.
A simple potentiometer remote controlled passive is the Creek OBH-22.
From the remote.

Hey all, before I start I already tried the search function and could only find a headache since there wasn't much covering the questions I had.
I just recently registered here (first post actually ) even though I've been lurking for awhile. Anyway, I...

A preamp--there are lots of prewired preamp harnesses that include all the pots, an active/passive with whether your bass has a preamp onboard.

In my search for great vinyl sound, I went from typical commercial mid-fi SS amplifiers with built-in phono preamps (mostly active feedback discrete) to home built single ended valve (tube) power amps with a separate valve phono amp with passive eq. based...

Another thing I want to add is some switchable networks, partial/split-FB/partial-passive, and full-passive RIAA phono stages.
With hybrid and passive eq networks.

I've seen Passive Preamps mentioned more than a few times and they all seem to consist of a few very expensive switches and little else.
Not being much of an electrician I'm a bit confused here. Do they actually amplify the signal or are they just dropping...

It would be more accurate to call devices like this "passive control centers"..
I think in this application the word "preamp" is confusing.
Your system around one you can be very happy.

Hey guys, I know many basses have built in preamps, so would it be redundant to get something like... a Sansamp preamp pedal?
Thanks !

Thanks ! While I play a passive bass to use them interchangeably - the preamp onboard your bass is not a replacement for the preamp at a given point in the chain....

Totally NOT my area of expertise here folks, so bear with me and that's why I am asking others who know better.
I have a passive Waterstone 12 string bass. Currently using a SansAmp as a pre but I have been thinking about doing something on-board. Vol...

If you have two tones, they are going to interact .

Hi all,
I think i've worded the question correctly.
Im doing up my old OLP bass, bought Nordstrand p/ups for it. I'm not that great when it comes to anything electrical so had a mate do the installation for me. he has it all installed, looking great, ...

I'm running Big Single 5s passive and love.
Brubaker Brute Squad #18
Spector Club #224 (USA NS-5H2W) AFAIK you can run any Nordy pups passive.
They are passive pickups, no preamp required.

To balance the two pickups with the same volume at the same pickup height, I know I'm going to have to put some preamp of some sort in to the passive to balance it with the active... So that's pretty much going to make it an active. WHATEVER.
I just need...

So you raised the bridge to that high to balance with the neck? Probably chokes pretty hard that close to the strings .
Look at the PDF on EMG's website.
I believe the EMG ABC (Active Balance Control) will handle the combination .

Doubtful that a passive "preamp" will have tone controls, as they have an
insertion loss.

Some preamps try to maintain the passive tone only louder while others aim to "improve" the passive sound.
It's just a design choice.
To this particular preamp voicing.
