I normally hose down my patio with just water but I would like to give the pavers a good deep clean as they are looking a bit grotty. What do you use to clean your outdoor area with?

Thanks I'll give that a go A high pressure washer does an awesome... .
To be honest, the sugar soap does a better job than the broom does - cleans them up very well with limited elbow grease .
I pour sugar soap on them and then scrub with a hard bristled broom .

But pavers are hard to sweep..
Tile can be slippery and the grout hard to clean .
You need to be sure enough sand can get in the joints as it is not as fine as grout .
In theory, polymeric sand will do that.
I live in the outer Richmond district of San Francisco, so the soil is more like sand than dirt. We've terraced our back yard with two ~3' retaining walls. We are putting in two paver patio's, but I'm not sure how to handle the runoff from the patio surface...

Use sand between the paver blocks so the surface of the patio can count as drainage area..

In order to keep everything "level" you'll need to slope the patio inwards towards a drain A LOT of slope in the drain....
The level wall/sloped patio has always been a tough one.
This will prevent the migration of the fines into the voids .
