I do from the T32.
For (2), if you are in an MD/PhD program are in an MD/PhD program you are ineligible for NSF grants despite your funding source.
It is purely an administrative matter as far as I know .

I'm a bit confused about your question - are you talking about completing both an MD and a PhD or are you just hoping to apply and enter then? Regardless, you need to consider these things: 1) MD/PhD will be finished with PhD coursework....

I obviously have no clue if I would be accepted to a program in the area but would like to set myself so that in the case that I am accepted to a program... .
I should also mention that I am moving to the area in the next few months to begin a RA position .

I think that asking about 'free time' or 'vacation time' belies a fundamental misunderstanding of what it is to be in a Ph.D .
Why don't UK universities give full funding for PhD students like US universities? Don't you think that any decent PhD program in sciences or technology should be fully funded by the department or through external means for students who are made an offer...
