You need to see a doctor if it is a pilonidal cyst (sometimes called a pilonidal sinus.

My DS has one of these now and is going to have surgery soon to remove. I am just wondering about others treatment and recovery in general. Apparently if caught early, surgery may not be needed but they can recur later. I had never even heard of them ...

The fatality rate on surgeries is very low unless you forget... .
Made it out alive in all.
I've been through 15 surgeries.
If you go for general anesthesia don't worry.
Be sure they keep dosing you constantly with local anesthetic if you're feeling the pain .
