I made a special trip out to South Dakota specifically to view the mating dance of the prairie chickens. It did not disappoint. It was one of my most enjoyable mornings spent in the great outdoors.

I'd trade every dang ditch parrot in Nodak for a decent, sustainable population of prairie.
That disappearing species such as prairie chickens and sage grouse would be a lot more prevalent and, ultimately, huntable.

This species is on my wanted list and i meant to go get him this year... .
I like the setting Bob, excellent take off flight pose and a distance BG and fore-ground vegetation .
Getting one off the ground is a fantastic opportunity.

Even though you can't see the feet leaving it a bit less tight would give more of a feel for place... .
A bit too tight all around for my tastes and maybe clone out that one blade of grass on the sac .

Very nice first post shot.
I spent last weekend in a blind in Wisconsin photographing these fellows. The season is winding down there. But it made for good photography as the BG was not full of other GPC's. The males on this lek all seemed to know each other and were not aggressive...

Something I have never tried to shoot I really like the interaction too Jon, and also the wing position and nice light & detail .
I like the interaction ahd how well posed the leading bird is .
