Most of the folks I talk with pronounce the surname with the accent on
the first syllable.
However, when I was in England recently on a choir tour, our tour
guide had a different opinion...

since it varies geographically, unless you assume that modern British
English is automatically the same pronunciation....

In some German words ending in "en" it seems as though some people do
not pronounce the "en". Is there a grammatical rule for this or is it
something that is becoming/has become in vogue?

Even in sloppy dialectal pronunciation, the resulting consonant is
considerably longer than of German
syllabic n.
