This are the bars I use on my own trading... they eliminate a lot of noise for me, and I find them better than renko bars.. IMO of course... here are some examples of using Midrange bars on various instruments.. and then compared to other bar types.. ...

FWIW, there are even competitions....
Most other trading softwares provide APIs (NinjaTrader, MetaStock etc).
I don't, TradeStation is the most famous of the lot .
I believe there is an API for working with ETrade and some of the other trading software.
