I agree, staying out by the airport is not a good idea .
I think staying at La Guardia is your first bad idea There is no subway from LaGuardia .

From looking at Google Earth it seems thatthe ships are docked some distance from the beginning of town. Wondering if there is any free or inexpensive transfers from port to town such as open mini train or something along that line.
