Why does it *have* to be a Q9650? The only difference is a .5 higher mulitiplier.
Q9650's all go for over $200 on ebay....but Q9550's are a lot cheaper.
If there is, it's probably 1-2 people on the whole forum .

I think the weird cpu usage has something to do with the way .

Who told you that the Q9550 would is easily 30-40% faster.
The i7 is faster then the Q9550 in every single way possible.
It has a faster clock speed, it's also a newer architecture .
No the i7 is faster than the Q9550.

I've noticed that transcoding time hasn't seen much, if any, improvement with this QuadCore. Perhaps it is due to it's non-use of all it's cores?

Well I found that the q9550's max safe voltage is 1.36v so I decided to go for 1.3.
But to get an idea from other overclockers, google 'safe vcore for q9550' - this will give you an idea.
