When trying to choose a SATA magnetic hard drive (not SSD) for high performance for both random and linear access, which should be the primary factor?
For example: would a 10k RPM drive with 16MB of cache perform better than a 7200RPM drive with 32MB ...

The 10K RPM drive will have a smaller rotational latency due....
Your total hard drive latency is the [seek latency] + [rotation latency].
The short answer is yes.
For linear access go for cache.
Random I/O, go for rpm.

Suppose you setup 8 drives in a RAID 10 configuration using 2.5" drives using 500GB capacity each (total 2TB with RAID10 config 1TB useable).
The controller (assume a typical 3ware SATA controller) is housed within a NAS setup that will use iSCSI and ...

Decent 7200rpm hard drive can push out 40-80Megabyte/sec for sequential reads, so even though your RAID and 5400 RPM drives.

I still haven't decided on a good hard drive for my rig. With the prices as high as they are at the moment, it isn't easy to make a definite decision, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions? I am looking for a simple, 1TB, 7200 RPM hard drive...

Should partition the 10K RPM drive into two partitions and put your VMs on one partition and your is that the VMs get the 10K RPM drive.

Hello;
What RPM Is needed for a NVR system? Will 5400 RPM be enough or is 7200 needed? What are your favorite hard drives for storage of about 1-2TB?
Thanks.

And yes F3 1TB hard drives, which are 7200rpm.
A 5400 RPM drive, they are often times very slow, I would say stick with tried and true 7200RPM.
