I've heard that the write performance of RAID 5 can be appalling at times. While I want the redundancy that it provides I don't want to sacrifice my database insert/update times.
Is this something I should be worried about and if so, what would be the...

RAID....
When between performance and space.
Every RAID5 write will cause at least 3 writes (plus a CRC calculation) .
Then the write buffer on the RAID 5 will quickly overflow and your straight into the "poor write performance" of RAID 5.

I've never done anything with RAID before until now. I have 2 disks that were previously set up on this computer and I need to reformat the drives. From what I know about the current configuration, one drive is marked as active and the other one is not...

In your RAID controller management interface? If you can give us more details, we can probably provide more information on that front, since that's probably very specific to your particular RAID setup.

I am looking for some advice on the recommended RAID configuration for ISA

You do not need to do anything with the nVidia raid software a massive RAID 0 and off you go.
You will need a backup.

All of a sudden, the power supply of a server started to smell real bad. One of the hot swappable power supply units died. We replaced it, booted up Windows Server 2003 to find out that 2 out of 4 drives in a RAID 5 configuration had died.
We're also ...

OK I'm not very familiar with raid so I apologize in advance if I don't explain this properly.

I love the fact that you can now buy 1 and 2 TB drives cheap. However that much data on a single drive scares me. What would be the best way to build a raid system out of external drives? I am looking for advice on performance, price, and ease of data...

I am trying to spec out a server machine to run VMWare ESX/ESXi to host about 3-4 VM's. They will likely be hosting VM's running IIS, Apache and BIND. We don't have a huge budget for this and to a certain degree this is an experiment in virtualization...

If you can't go to 15k scsi the use raid 10, if you can get the 15k scsi then any raid will perform sufficiently.
raid controller you won't have any problems.
