I'm purchasing a server with 8 SAS disks to perform database intensive procedures. Currently the main bottleneck is is large index scans in postgres.
I'm currently deciding between 8x300Gb 10k disks or 8x140Gb 15k disks as it would be more convenient ...

This sounds a little worrisome to me, it sounds like a low-end RAID controller.

I've heard that the write performance of RAID 5 can be appalling at times. While I want the redundancy that it provides I don't want to sacrifice my database insert/update times.
Is this something I should be worried about and if so, what would be the...

RAID....
When between performance and space.
Every RAID5 write will cause at least 3 writes (plus a CRC calculation) .
Then the write buffer on the RAID 5 will quickly overflow and your straight into the "poor write performance" of RAID 5.

I've never done anything with RAID before until now. I have 2 disks that were previously set up on this computer and I need to reformat the drives. From what I know about the current configuration, one drive is marked as active and the other one is not...

In your RAID controller management interface? If you can give us more details, we can probably provide more information on that front, since that's probably very specific to your particular RAID setup.

No advice? Personally I think option 3 - set it up as your main OS drive with a reinstall and use the controller setting in my BIOS to "RAID" from AHCI.

All of a sudden, the power supply of a server started to smell real bad. One of the hot swappable power supply units died. We replaced it, booted up Windows Server 2003 to find out that 2 out of 4 drives in a RAID 5 configuration had died.
