I also took my mother's advice (who has PERFECT credit) and signed up for a credit card, only use it for gas, and pay it off.
I took out a $1,000 loan and paid it off in a year so it helped a bit .

It sounds like you have collections and paying those will most likely, initially lower your score.
Have a loan officer run your credit and show you what you need to do, but don't expect a quick fix.

About the only thing that would raise your credit score under these circumstances is if one or more of your credit card accounts raise your credit limit.

A secured loan is cheap...you borrow payments either.
No quick, easy or free way to raise your score so much.
The whole idea of a credit score.
6-9 months and probably wont raise your score 50 points.

Pay bills on time, Contact lenders and work out payment plan, Start using cash,request a rapid rescoring after paying some bills.
