Is there an advantage one over the other?
Which might be better for a beginner?

As JWK says remove the turf first if not not only will it grow through .
Compost to add to your raised bed.

When I first made 4 raised beds about 6 yrs ago we had good success with veg growing. However gradually the beds have become invaded by fibrous tree roots and after lots of ongoing work to clear them I have almost given up. Does anyone know if it is possible...

A chap on the alottment covered some pallet boards with black... .
Organic and no nastys to leach into the soil.
Pallet boards are pretty hard anyway and will last quite a long time but you could give them a good soaking in linseed oil before you use them .

Which is cheaper, from catalogs or building myself?
What sort of lumber? Need sturdy and long lasting, but economical too.
Lumber available locally, however there is extra charge for cutting to size.
Labor is free (building myself).
Would be for melons...

There was someone here last....
After I fill the inside.
We have easy inches into the ground, leaving ten inches above ground for the raised bed.
I've had a new idea for raised beds based on something I saw recently on the web.

Afternoon, sisters. Now, this may be a very silly question, but I'm a very "green" green thumb. My hubby and I have been talking about getting some raised beds going for over a year now. I say it's time we actually do it!
A few problems:

Why are raised beds raised?
I can see the point of separating the beds from the paths - so that you
can access the beds without treading on the earth.
What is the purpose of having...

As others have said....
There is just about a 3 week advantage to the daffs in the raised bed
than in the lawn, for example.
It's much less disheartening to look at a raised bed full of weeds than an
entire garden.

Really need recommendations of what dimensions (length, width, and depth) should be.
Which is cheaper, from catalogs or building myself? Somebody suggested using lumber from pallets, but this isn't an option, as material from pallets aren't available....
