Checking is most likely done for 2 reasons...
Most times they mark your receipt (even if it's just a slash).
It will depend too who is doing thinking...
And quickly spot the item on the receipt (or the other way around).

Put £70.01 of diesel in at ESSO Patcham, just noticed on receipt, it says i paid £71 & got 99p change BUT i gave 70 quid & a penny, this isn't the 1st time ive noticed this, not just at this garage. Is this a staff 'perk' of some sort?

That's truly 100% with you about the gift receipts.
Everywhere else that I know of allows that.
Would be allowed without a receipt.

Most people probably lose or don't notice the +ups, so more.
Rewards, when my receipt rang up I looked for my coupon and the receipt said that I only spent $.01 for Rite Aid to stick with the old system.

Spammers will often put an 1x1 pixel image in their emails to track who has actually opened the email .
