Do reciprocal links hurt? I have found it very difficult to get reciprocal links compared to when I had a site back in 2004. Are search engines, specifically google, penalizing reciprocal links?

A link is a reciprocal link if you link to a website and that website links back to your website. You send visitors to the other site and the other website sends visitors back to you.
That makes sense because all visitors leave a website sooner or later...

Years ago reciprocal linking was a major tool for building links. The fact that there was a sub-forum devoted to it here reflects that fact.

I have never done link exchanges for any of my site (apart from one or two here are for traffic and not for link juice and so if I have a request from good site with decent traffic, I can do some exchange for mutual traffic flow.
