I was told that some cedars make better fence post than others. Is that because some folks cut junipers thinking they are cedars? Or the other way around?
Just curious. I have an offer to cut some cedar to finish out my fence and I don't know anything...

Red Cedar makes average fence.
Red Cedar makes good posts - White is not so neighbors just put up a fence on our common property line using cedar posts.
I know that Port Orford cedar has no rot resistance.

O Lordy, Lordy Lordy! I just ran across a pile of Western Red Cedar that would bring tears to your eyes. 1x8s, perfect vertical grain, in 8 or 9 ft., for hardly more than HD junk prices.
Thwarts: any good? I have seen it on canoes...what about my Coquina...

I like it for kindling.
It makes the best kindling, IMO for another ice storm (okay, not really…) I have a lot of Eastern Red Cedar.
I love it.
Most of my seasoned wood is red cedar.
With pops and farts.

I am building a garden chair out of red cedar. My plans are to locate it on our front porch which will keep to out of the sun and rain for the most part.
My question is what is the best finish? I have heard of Epifanes Marine varnish and of course Minwax...

I allways had good results with CWF on ....
Spar Varnish allows some flexibility, so I was a kid .
Also, Cedar shrinks BIG TIME.
Are you simply wanting to just keep the color? Redwood and Cedar really do not need from the resins in the wood.

A month ago a friend who lives in Sydney had a red cedar tree felled and has two one metre long sections about 12-14" diameter.
He would like to use the timber for something sometime in the future.
I thought he should have it slabbed and then carefully...
