I've just thrown another mp3 player in the garbage - seems the damn things are disposable... My latest was a Centon, in the past year I've owned models from sandisk, sansa, creative - none have lasted longer than 3 mos.

Take a look at this exhausting list of codec identifiers .
There is also the TrID utility that does this automatically .
Look at the file data itself (binary) and then use info from wotsit to determine file type .
