I have been reading so much negative talk about rental companies. So, who have you had a great experience with and for those who live in SXM, who do you recommend? Thanks!

The smaller companies have less full size/van/SUV available so if you are booking last minute they'll likely.
Very nice people and car was fine for good.
Just used Paradise Rental car for a 2 week hire.

You book your reservation online and when you pick up the car then they charge the actual fee of the rental....
That is what we do and never get the rental insurance.
Your personal car insurance should be fine if it covers rental cars.
