I think people have a tendency to go for rewrites because it seems more fun on the surface your code so that it is unit testable.

I accidently uninstalled (apt-get purge) lots of important system stuff, including gnome dekstop and whatever-is-responsible-for-internet-connetion, among other things. Is there any way to repair it? Without complete reinstall?

I've seen cold-boot issues ....
It appears the drive is configured properly, and the first partition is marked active, so that's not the problem (as evidenced by it working properly on warm-boot/reboot) .
It actually sounds like a BIOS or controller issue.
