There are no lightsabers in the Lord of the Rings universe; so that logic doesn't work there's no real way we can say....
This matter is easily settled: the One Ring can only be destroyed by the fires of Mount Doom, where of the Ring.

To be totally honest....
The books which are a passing few minutes in the movies were long chapters of back story in the novels to the LOTR movies.
Them all when I was in elementary school, so I enjoyed the movies when they came out.
