If the pants ever do rip I'm sure he would just replace them as his Atama rip stop pants was in the seems, not the actual material.

Yes, definitely bigger needles...
When I do two yarns together it is usually because the yarn I have, but it would go a lot faster and give a tweedy or variegated look to the yarn.
