2nd CIV3d, 3rd there are some freebie surface programs out there that search for DTM or triangles these will do step 1 above for you.
This will make a defacto surface that can be seen in 3d, make triangles.

You can show that the area of the orignal triangle is 1/(n.k) times the area of the projected... .
Project each triangle back to the XY plane.
Consider the polygon mad up from a heap of smaller triangles .
You can derive the solution in terms of the 2D solution .

How do you guys model the "shoulder" of the road? glue and sand? gravel? Also.. Looking for ideas on turning a bland grey wood track, into looking more like a road surface.

I would recommend keeping the shoulders as close to the track surface texture as you can.

I would just leave it; chances are youre going to do it again .
Why fix it if your gonna do it again? Guess we just gotta go into sharp curvs a little slower .

Braking surface So if a friend had a hed h3 clincher wheel and he didnt like the braking surface. what would you use to cover it? electrical tape? paint it? what kind of paint? sharpie?

I also noticed that rather than filling the pot holes in before adding the incredibly poor surface dressing, they simply laid....
