Well, I was talking with a guy about servers the other day. I was a bit shocked whenever I asked him if there was any significant difference between SCSI and SATA and why he always uses SCSI. (note, I'm not sure if by SCSI he meant SAS)
He told me that...

Here's an interesting article I read a while back comparing the two ( http is totally BS .
Until recently, I would have agreed with the guy and said SCSI (or SAS) is a better solution than their SCSI equivalent.

I think it doesn't exist under the following path bash-3.00# ls -la ../../devices/pci\@8\,6 /scsi\@1\,1
bash-3.00# ls -la ../../devices/pci\@....
When you look at the symlink destination "/devices/pci@8,6 /scsi@1,1/st@3,0:" does that exist.

I'm backing up about 100gb worth of data on backup exec and after much deliberation, have decided that tapes are worth another shot (after my ultrium decided to die and munch tapes). Bearing in mind that my SCSI controller might be on its way out, I'm...

LTO is effectively the standard tape technology:
Quantum LTO2 tape drive: $829.00 15 LTO2 tapes: $30*15 = $450.00 PCI-E SCSI card: $160 format.
I'd suggest a SAS or SCSI LTO3/LTO4 drive.
Is a horrible format).

We have a HP DL380 G3 with HP LTO3 Ultrium external tape drive attached via VHDCI SCSI port. How do we get Windows Server 2003 to recognise the tape drive so it can be used?

Rebooting Windows is the answer..
It's use with NTBackup is specifically discouraged/unsupported.
It comes with and needs 'HP Data Protector Express Single Server Edition Software', use that .

Hi,
I have an Adaptec AHA-2940UW SCSI adapter, to which I connected a single Atlas 10K III drive (and nothing more). When my computer loads up, the pre-OS Adaptec screen shows (I believe this is called the POST screen), where I can see the Atlas drive...

I think I have found the problem.
Enter the Adaptec BIOS on this screen and run a scan on all ports .

SCSI hard drives and controllers are much more expensive than SATA and are only.
You will never find a SCSI hard drive in a standard desktop or laptop from an OEM unlikely to be SCSI.
And the ability to hot swap.

I'm looking to possibly upgrade the SCSI drive in my Power Mac 8500. What type of SCSI drive should I be looking for? I'm a little bewildered by wide SCSI, ultra SCSI, sooper-dooper SCSI, etc.
Are all these newer SCSI standards backward compatible with...

So stick to the conventional third-height size.
Any 50-pin SCSI drive will do, as well as any that can be converted to 50-pin such as many 68-pin ventilate.

Has anyone successfully used SCSI mapping to present a SCSI tape drive to a VM for backup purposes? My servers do not support VMDirectIO (VT-d), so I can't present the PCI device to the VM, and my Adaptec 39160 is not supported in ESXi4. Before I spend...

Plan for your ESXi box to address this tape drive? Don't forget with ESXi there's now COS to load license, if so I think you'd be better off backup up via the to a second machine with the tape drive.
