I'm backing up about 100gb worth of data on backup exec and after much deliberation, have decided that tapes are worth another shot (after my ultrium decided to die and munch tapes). Bearing in mind that my SCSI controller might be on its way out, I'm...

Newer tape drives, such as LTO4, are much more expensive technology:
Quantum ....
Guess what, it's only available in SCSI.
LTO is effectively the standard tape.
I'd suggest a SAS or SCSI LTO3/LTO4 drive.
Is a horrible format).

Well, I was talking with a guy about servers the other day. I was a bit shocked whenever I asked him if there was any significant difference between SCSI and SATA and why he always uses SCSI. (note, I'm not sure if by SCSI he meant SAS)
He told me that...

They are designed more than the theoretical....
SCSI basic level SCSI drives will be more reliable simple because they are built better.
If that were so, any new filesystem would need firmware upgrades on all drives.
Is totally BS.

Like Bunsen said, make sure that all of your drives, internal and external drive....
I would have suggested a SCSI ID conflict - make that or the SCSI cable is bad.
But when powered it tries to boot off the empty drive.

Got an HP Proliant DL380 I need drives for. Looking for around 36GB per drive, or drives that run at 15K RPM.
They need to look like this (with or without caddy)

I've got a Promise vTrak m210p subsystem. It supports LUN mapping & masking, and has two SCSI channels (2 VHDCI ins & 2 outs on rear of device). I believe this question will probably apply to many devices of this type.

Basically you can link it to two servers, each with an external parallel SCSI-320 interface (something ... .
Connect it to a server(s), and share via NFS or iSCSI?
This one is actually quite easy as there's a limit to how that box can be used in this way .

I'm more familiar with ESX but the next things i would look at are:
Permon Trace on... .
But the 7200 drives should be good.
On?
EDIT: That shouldn't be too horrible although i would really have liked to see SAS drives with 10k spindle speed.
