180 vs 195 Degree Thermostat
I have been reading the discussions about thermostats and going without or drilling holes in them and it got me to thinking. (Yes, I know, that is dangerous) I have been running a 180 degree thermostat with the aluminum radiator...

A thermostat just starts to open at the rated temperature, not fully open.

You should be getting at hotter reading there than if you moved from the mechanical gauge.

I broke down and did the thermostat Mod.
I could not deal with the anxiety of watching my engine temperature climb from a usual 204 to 220 and sometimes 230 with a brand new L.R. engine and brand new L.R. head assemblies.
4 or 5 stock thermostats later...

The thermostat in my truck is cycling from one. Temp to another. Anywhere from 180 to 210, and it even climbed to 220 this morning. I think it is sticking. I called the parts house and a Stant is like $6.00. Then I called Cummins Atlantic and an OE one...

Surprised it never caught on fire- probably because the thermostat was stuck open not allowing the engine - the on in the truck that I removed looks much different than the new Stant Tstat I picked up.

I run a 160 in my 427 but I have electric fans and a thermostat thermostat, the oil cap would turn milky.
And the mileage will be quite a bit lower.

I have a pair of dual electric fans and I'm setting up.
I have my fans (Spal twin 11 inch) set to come on at 210 and off at 180 .
I use a 160 Stant.
