American school years explained? I'm from the UK and I was wondering can anybody explain the different types of school and american words for their school years? if that makes sence e.g.whats a softmore,

Middle school and secondary school is started at the same time except we call our first year 'Year 7' and they call it ....

What school year in England are the following American Grades equivalent to?
Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (is that how high it goes?) All the way to Secondary School or High school as others know it?

I am considering taking a year off between my undergrad and medical school. Do medical schools look down on students who do this, or does it not make a difference?
