Also possible is Robert Silverberg's novel Time of the Great Freeze, though that one is more glaciers than snow .
The set-up sounds like Fritz Lieber's terrific "A Pail of Air," , but that's a story, not a book .

I am just now starting to read some Science Fiction, but I still prefer Fantasy.
