I would try an external monitor and that would rule out any graphics card problems. .

It could be a number of problems, from graphics card, display, display cable or invertor board .

Does the computer make any sounds like the fans running when it's turned on?
Does it emit the normal short, single beep when you turn it on?
If yes to both questions, then try a new VGA signal cable to the monitor .

If so then there are 2 main scenarios that would've caused it:
1) Backlight in lcd screen has failed (rare)
2) There is a small clip/button to tell the computer....
At the screen, can you see any picture behind, despite it being black.

If you DO always have video while booting BEFORE Windows is supposed to load but no video AFTER that, that's a software problem... .
I'm assuming you are getting no video at all from the built in display, even while booting BEFORE Windows is supposed to load .

If the backlighing is out then you will see an a faint image .
Also try taking a flashlight and shining it on an angle across the screen.
Then it is something directly relayed to the screen.
