TypeMock allows you to mock sealed classes, but I doubt that they'd encourage you to use the same technique for production ....
No, you can't extend a sealed class in any legitimate way.

In this particular case, you'd need to ask a Microsoft developer why they chose to seal a mechanism to extend sealed classes, called extension methods.
And performance reasons.
