Where should one go to be kept updated on all of the security flaws/problems floating around? Specially in the era of open source where we tend to use libraries from everywhere.

For protecting files locally or on a network, it should be fine... .
There are tools that can crack a zip file password but they have to do it using brute force, usually starting with a dictionary attack .
There aren't any big flaws in ZIPs password.
