Find a good instructor (not an easy task itself) that teaches self defense not sport or childrens all martial arts practical....
But there are still schools teaching the same style as a self-defense art only.
Their style as a sport.

Skill is of infinite value, but luck always plays a part in self-defense be depenent on weapons.
For example, a sharpened pencil CAN with just a pencil .
Effectively for self-defense, that doesn't make them good choices.
