Is a sense of humor about yourself essential in writing good poetry? Even if the work is serious? I have noticed that people who do not have this quality write poor poetry.

Re: Comedy/Sense of humor Almost everything. Seriously, my sense of humour is very broad. From just being random, to political humour, to offensive jokes. The only kind of humour I don't like is things involving gore, and things like extreme religion ...

Holy cow! While assuredly humor is a great ice-braker, and funny is good....if THAT joke is your idea of funny, you'd be talking to empty air very quickly if trying it out on me. All I can say.
