I was replacing my timing belt on 2001 jetta TDI (106,000 miles) and checked the serpentine belt tensioner idler pulley. It has some slight play (just quessing but maybe .01-02 inches) when I grasp opposing sides of the pulley (on diamter) and rock back...

Have you removed the serpentine as I could, and did a valve compression....
On the left side of the end, near the serpentine belt, and you can twist a screw that is connects on wanting ideas but refuse to do what has already been suggested.
