I have a 97 m3 automatic. the car wont move when i shift it into gear forward or reverse. also the engine wont rev over about 3k as if something is holding it back . if my trans is bad could it be keeping the motor from revving freely?
i just bought this...

When the friction pads on the shift bands get worn through you above 3K rpm because that's about the stall....
Just giving my opinion, I am however I interested into what's causing your 3k rpm & noises has done what it's been told to do.

Just did a search and the common low rev 1k to 3k is a clogged cat..

Could it be the cam shaft position sensor....
Dont recall the number of the other off the top of my head .
Any check engine lights? yes but i got some false codes that started with 0 instead of 1 except for the camshaft code and 1250 not sure what that is .

So my girlfriends car starts, revs itself 2-3k rpms, then dies all in a matter of about 5 seconds. Now it is not an eclipse, it is a 2002 automatic jetta vr6, however i could really use some advice because i never seen this before

A shift control solenoid is fried and messing with the throttle input by pulling it shut even when you the throttle body when someone starts it, sounds like a shift control solenoid is fried and messing.
