Objective:
I'd like to enter all my assignments/exams for each class and their due dates, and then specify how many days in advance i'd want the reminder to just sit on my desktop. I don't want it to be interactive or anything I just want it to sit there...

Once you've got a simple "proof of concept" thing like this going you can.
However, you will learn alot about how to actually write a BMP file, etc) .
In the case of such a simple app it seems unnecessary.

If it must be an AutoHotkey....
If you run a simple batch files like:
@echo off echo Reminder message here a reminder 20 minutes after logging on:
WScript.Sleep 12 WScript.Echo "That was hard"
Write these lines.
Can handle this too.

You could then preform what ever actions you need.

Like so:
SELECT u_birth, IF(DATE(CONCAT(YEAR(NOW()),....
Then do the comparison.
Instead, extract the month and day and concat them together with today's year .
Don't use dayofyear as anything after Feb 29th in a leap year is one day further on than usual .
