I have a PERC 5/i RAID controller currently hosting two drives in RAID 1. I am about to add a third drive in "direct" mode, just a normal physical volume.
Would performance be better if the drive is attached to the motherboard's controller or to the RAID...

Check out the performance characteristics of the card and determine how the addiional drive.
Plus, what if later on you want to use that single drive into a RAID 0,1 array?

Is there any support in Windows 7 - or through third-party software - to easily combine multiple physical drives into a single, large virtual drive?
I'm looking for something similar to how many Unix/Linux variants are able to combine drives into a single...

A mounted drive is a drive that is mapped to an empty folder on a volume drive paths instead....
This is actually less reliable that just having to accomplish what you're after .
Will simply merge the disks onto a single mount point.

I have an external 1.5TB HDD which I would like to use as a backup for both my Mac (OSX 10.5.7) and PC (Windows Server 2003). If possible, I would like to utilize Apple's built in Time Machine for the Mac backups and then use another tool (any recommendations...

In the future, I will buy more drives and make use of the drobo's failure protection, but for now I have just one drive in it. Is there a way to get it to let me use the whole disk instead of only half? I'm using it as a backup of other disks, so I don...

If you want to use a single drive you should use either....
It does not protect again drive failure (obviously).
Looked at their support site and it seems like when a single drive is used, half of it is reserved protected.

I've watched a few youtube videos demonstrating the so called click of death and they all show a hard drive that 'clicks' nonstop. My hard drive will occasionally make a clicking sound, but it happens sporadically and it's usually just one click. Does...

I switched mine to dual motors and the X and could not believe the difference .
At very minimum, run dual screws and drive them both with a belt, like the Solsyva's do.

If I have a single drive, and want to get an exact match for it, how would I go about RAID0ing it? Using Win7.
The drive I want to do this on is a mechanical drive, and not the boot drive...
