My VLC player used to work fine but all of a sudden it doesn't display any images, only sound. I've tried a variety of files that play just fine in Windows Media Player . I've tried reinstalling the player but this hasn't helped either.

You should be able to boost the volume.
I'm not sure why that is, but that's one of the reasons I use VLC instead of Quicktime.
Quicktime maxes out at 100%.
VLC's sound level goes up to 400%.

I installed VLC and now I can only get sound out of the audio jack or HDMI cable when plugged in. No sound out of speakers, for any player of any file type.

The sound in the newest version is really terrible, I tried all audio output modules, but always there is a clipping and other artefacts. Afect MP3 files also, not only video files!

Look to the bottom-right most of the screen while using VLC.
