My VLC player used to work fine but all of a sudden it doesn't display any images, only sound. I've tried a variety of files that play just fine in Windows Media Player . I've tried reinstalling the player but this hasn't helped either.

You should be able to boost the volume.
I'm not sure why that is, but that's one of the reasons I use VLC instead of Quicktime.
Quicktime maxes out at 100%.
VLC's sound level goes up to 400%.

When using VLC in my Windows 7 (RC), the audio works only if my head phones are connected. Without the head phones, the audio is not heard at all. Other players deliver the audio perfectly. Is this caused by some incorrect preferences ?

Its likely that the VLC output stream is being picked up as a push to talk'.
Based on the source of the sound (e.g, so your ventrillo for WoW only comes out your headphones and not your speakers).

Arecord should show works in vlc as well you can....
I solved the issue by compiling vlc with oss support and using my alsa's oss format S24_3LE (note the 3) for my sound card (24 bit signed little endian).
