Ive always used Sports with aftermarket sport springs and HD's for stock non-sport springs, but I'm not sure where the E39 sport (M-tech II if it matters) falls... as I have never owned anything with a "factory...

I made the mistake of ....
I'm now running HD's on stock M-sport springs (Mtech II) replaced back in 2007.
Ive ridden in 540s stated is, stiff, but controlled.
With the OEM sport springs, you can use either the Bilstein HDs or Sports.
