Sprint can't take SIM cards, and the Nextel aspect doesn't actually use GSM service (they use is 'NO'
Though the nextel phone has the SIM card slot, it's totally incompatable technologies.

Sprint network is also being upgraded so will be decommissioning it Nextel network starting in 2013 to move the 800 frequency to Sprint Network network.

Sprint and Nextel were you'd need new phones because Nextel phones do no work with the Sprint network and vice versa at other carriers.
If you didn't know already the Nextel network will cease to exist by 2015.

Having said that, apparently Sprint is offering CDMA Direct Connect devices for 99 cents to keep you a happy PTT customer.
Sprint is looking at which towers from Nextel are no longer needed.
PTT will not be "dead" in April.
