You can start.
I am not in the games industry but I do have a small web game (Google "World of Arl") and it was not hard to setup.
A small game, put it on the web and you have the start of a portfolio.

First off, I have never done one myself, but I imagine that any massively multi-player game would entail some sort of central server to hold statistics (wins/losses), rankings, game table information on the type of game.
