I'm a chronic Vegas hotel searcher, and the Hostel Cat is always there at the beginning of the listings. I mean, really, why would anyone ever do this? You could get a perfectly nice room at the El Cortez or Gold Spike for less money than it would cost...

Bizarrely it has 3.5 stars on TA! That's more than the Flamingo! Hostels the only time I woudl have done it when i was young.

You might also be able to find a place hotels and hostels, but I would take....
First day to explore and see what is around the hotel/hostel that you choose, what bars & restaurants might get a better deal as they will want you to stay.

K's Kyoto guesthouse has branches all over Japan , and has a reputation as one of the best hostels in Asia , if not the world. I stayed in there in Kyoto last summer, and thought it was one of the nicest youth hostels I had ever been.

Is camping cheaper than staying in hostels all the time? I like to do a bit of both when off on my travels to the USA then down to New Zealand and Australia...

I have been hostelling a fair bit recently. Have stayed in some cool hostels a few with communal showers, bar flimsy curtains. Noticed a fair bit of wanking/showing off going on. Any other similar experiences?

I would guess that most hostels in Iceland are communal and you may get a telling off.
The hostel I stayed at in Reykjavik had open communal showers which were always busy, never saw care if someone else saw their penis.
