To really optimize the mix before mastering it would be awesome to have a mastering engineer listen to the track(s) one is mixing to spot out problems!
Im one of those who wants to mix down to a stereo track using no stems (perhaps just a song stem)

Use the master fader for 'Mastering'; I suppose the master output usually happily ranges to -3 max, the idea is to keep the final mixing and ....

Really, I know I can use some plugins for 'pre-mastering' or mastering a bit on your own before even remotely calling for a pro mastering service or engineer....
but I would think it can be misleading and you could damage your mix even further up to the...

Digital isn't destructive....
Try making some stem mixes of the important elements so your mastering engineer can process them useful book called "Mastering Audio" which would answer all of your questions in a lot of detail to later.

I am curious about things like using a Dangerous 2-Bus for analog summing (as recommneded in Zen and the Art of Mixing) or printing to analog tape(but not sold on the value for the money/pain the assness) ... I've always been "in the box" guy as I learned...

It depends on the mastering engineer's techniques and what the client wants.
Not just get the "analog sound" from the mastering stage? Is that too late? Sometimes that's done.
