Is it possible to "upmix" (split) stereo output from games, winamp, youtube and so on through 5.1 speaker set? Movies from DVD or some games uses all 6 speakers, but most of today's usage does not.
I know foobar2000 can upmix stereo MP3 to all speakers...

Yes it's possible Control Panel app lists two faux surround... .
If you are wiring your audio output to external equipment through a stereo path,
you will be limited to that.
If your hardware has a 5.1 output path, the upmix will be supported.

I recently bought a laptop with decent speakers & sound card in it. I want to use headphones but im unsure if they also need to have the same audio channels as the sound card (5.1 in this case). Also The laptop itself only has the two standard sound ports...

If you are looking to get some 5.1 headphones, they will not use the same 3/4 in headphone jack your microphone and regular....
You can use regular stereo headphones with your 5.1 sound card, you will however, only get 2 channels of sound.

Your receiver doesn't have a FLAC decoder, which would be different than the Dolby or DTS built in encoder .
Which then uses its onboard decoders to decode the audio into 5.1 sound.

I've found a few KVMs that support audio. But at best they support stereo. Are there any KVMs on the market that support 5.1 audio?

Would just be a extra box + one extra power cable) go to a audio specialist and get a 5.1 mixer output (I honestly don't remember what it's called, but can transfer 5.1 over a single RCA cable.

I have an acer aspire revo connected via HDMI to a 5.1 surround sound system. It uses the nvidia ION graphics chipset.
I can only get it into 2 channel stereo mode, as far as i can tell its supposed to be capable of 8 channel sound.
It has 64bit windows...

Make sure your speakers are set to 5.1 under the sound panel in control panel.
And no, 7.1 (to the best of my knowledge I've found are 6 channel .
5.1 sound works fine on my Revo with Windows 7 (x86).
