At work as far as stick welding goes we have a basic old Lincoln buzz box stick welder. We use almost exclusively 6011 rods. I get a lot of spatter but I can generally get a good looking weld. Sometimes my welds look bad but hold great. This is the first...

Preheating to help Stick Welding Hi. I'm wondering if anyone in these forums has used preheating to help with their stick welding. Will it help me weld relatively larger pieces with a slightly smaller rod? I suspect it will help reduce warpage and probably...

I have done in the past (I have not had to pre-heat anything in a long time!) with stick welding is completely heated, and then cools down as a whole.

Stick welding aluminum? Want to ask the great minds in these forums about the possibility of stick welding aluminum. I've read bits and pieces all over the web. Some say you need AC to break the oxidation layer, some threads talking about DC reverse polarity...

I like mig welding aluminum since fast and leave a nice weld on aluminum plate.
DC reverse polarity (electrode positive) when stick welding aluminum its not a nice clean weld like tig or mig .

Anybody stick weld aluminum? What things should I be looking for in terms of equipment to be able to do this? Any deal breakers where stick welding would simply not work well? I won't be able to afford MIG or TIG setups - just want to ensure my expectations...

I'm working on tacking a 1/8" bar to some small (1/2" o.d.) square tube (tee joint). Knowing how thin that stuff is, I bought a small piece that I cut up and I've been practicing on it.
Initially I started ...

Picked up some 1/8-inch Lincoln Aluminweld 43 rod the other day. Did some playing around with it this morning. I've had this 1/4-inch aluminum plate for at least 30-years laying in the junk pile. Took a stainless steel wire wheel and cleaned it up, and...
