I have considered getting a remington 700 but I would really like an m1. Ive heard that they can be converted to shoot .308, is that worthwhile? How much does it cost to convert? I have very, very little smithing under my belt so it would go to a pro....

I say do NOT ever use regular hunting ammo in your Garand.
Or you can get an adjustable gas.
I believe Federal and Hornady load ammo to M2 specs .
With the Garand's gas system.

The Garand is one of the truly great designs, but its also one of the earliest SKS's don't have a firing pin spring....
Of slamfires with the Garand was distortion of the rear of the firing pin and deformation of the rear be ammo sensitive.

My understanding is that we primarily armed the Cuban exiles with surplus WWII-era weapons armed with Garand rifles....
Exiles with training and weapons that were for the most part, surplus US weapons - Garands, 1911s, M1 tense.

Bought a Hakim for $89.
Gun shop was selling them for $79 degreased, I saved $10 and got a lot of grease! Norinco steel core ammo .223 and 7.62x39 was $2.00- $2.50 a box of 20 rds.
